Pesticide Safety Education Program


This page provides resources and information for private and commercial certified pesticide applicators in the Commonwealth. Information has been prepared or adapted by extension specialists in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology and Weed Science. The information covers a variety of pests including insects, diseases and weeds. Information is provided for field crops, greenhouse crops, forage crops, fruits and vegetables, lawn and turf, shade trees and ornamentals, structural, household pests and others.

Commercial and Non-commerical Applicators Definitions of commercial and non-commercial applicators, operators and applicators, and dealers and sales agents. List of 21 commercial categories, initial certification testing dates and locations.  Approved Continuing Education Opportunities. This listing provides dates, locations, and CEU hours assigned to approved training meetings approved by the Ky Dept of Ag for specific categories. Check on your CEU credits. This Ky Department of Ag site lets you see the number of continuing education credits you have accumulated during your current 3-year certification period.

Applying Pesticides Correctly The CORE Manual - basic information on many pesticide topics.

Forest Pest Control Manual- Category 2   Using pesticides in forests, forest nurseries, and forest seed-producing areas.

Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Manual- Category 3   New Revision April 2009 The information in this manual has been reorganized and some new information has been added. No information from the previous version has been deleted. Using pesticides or fertilizer for insect, weed, and/or disease control in residential and commercial plantscapes and lawns. Includes the control of pests that do not normally invade structures, such as bagworms, grubs, and moles.

Seed Treatment Manual- Category 4   Applying pesticide seed treatments.

Right-of-Way Manual- Category 6   Using pesticides in the maintenance of public roads, electric powerlines, pipelines, railway rights-of-way or other similar areas

Public Health Pest Management Manual- Category 7 & 8   You will also need this Supplemental Information Industrial, Institutional, Structural, and Health-Related Pest Control: All applicators using or supervising the use of pesticides in, on, or around food handling establishments, human dwellings, institutions such as schools and hospitals, industrial establishments including warehouses and grain elevators, and any other structures and adjacent areas, public or private; and for the protection of stored, processed, or manufactured products. Industrial institutional, structural and health-related pest control is divided into the following subcategories:

  • Structural pest control certification covers the use of pesticides in the control of general pests and wood-destroying organisms by all means other than fumigation, and covers all elements of "wood-destroying organism certification" in paragraph (c) of these subsections.
  • Structural fumigation certification covers the use of pesticides in the form of poisonous gases.Structural Fumigation Training Manual
  • Wood-destroying organism certification covers the use of pesticides to control wood-destroying organisms only.
  • General pest certification covers the use of pesticides to control general pests only.
Public Health Pest Control: State, federal or other governmental employees using or supervising the use of pesticides in public health programs for the management and control of pests having medical and public health importance.

Anti-Microbial Pest Control Manual- Category 15   Applying pesticides to control bacteria, mold, or fungi, to or through any media.

Golf Course Pest Control Manual- Category 18   Applying pesticides or fertilizer to land on which turf and ornamental care is done for the purpose of preparing the land for use in the game of golf.

Interior Plantscape Pest Control Manual- Category 19   Using pesticides to control insects, weeds, and/or disease in or on interior plantscapes, not regarding who owns the plants.

Sports Turf Pest Control Manual- Category 20   Applying pesticides or fertilizer to athletic fields.

Resources Kentucky Regulatory Topics

Arysta Life Sciences manufactures Midas 50-50, a soil fumigant replacement for methyl bromide. This is a Restricted Use Pesticide. In addition to being a certified by Kentucky, applicators must take training and pass an on-line exam provided by Arysta. KY Pest News contains articles written by Extension Specialists in Entomology, Plant Pathology and Weed Science Cooperative Extension Specialists on insects, diseases and weeds that affect crops and landscapes in the Commonwealth. The newsletter is published weekly during the peak growing season and bi-weekly the remainder of the year. Integrated Pest Management in Kentucky
Information available from this site includes an overview of the Ky IPM program along with crop manuals and fact sheets, weather and degreeday models, and picture sheets.

Crop Profiles for Kentucky
Crop profiles were prepared to help the USDA and EPA obtain complete production information for various commodities. They also provide a look at current research activities directed at finding replacement strategies for pesticides of concern. Crop Profiles include typical use information and have a common format for ease of use.
